The Gospel and being a big black dude!

Sometimes I can forget that I look very intimidating to people. Especially when I have that wooly mammoth that I been rocking the last 5 months. Trying to share the gospel can scare people off as what I think happened on Friday. I would post the details but I am actually going to share the story in my sermon Sunday. Some of you heard this Friday night. But by the grace of God I will have a story to tell by next Friday. Anyone else got to share the gospel last week?

Time is not on your side!

I was just talking to a friend and I was explaining something to her about time and then I just had what I would call an epiphany. Well, maybe not but still a thought that I had actually grieved me. This may not have the same effect on you but I have been impacted by this.
The average Christian spends an hour day with God 365/hrs a year divided by 24(hours in a day) and you get 15.2 days.
The average Christian spends 3/hrs a week on a Sunday in church. Multiply that by 52 (weeks in a year) and you get 6.5 days a year in church.
The average Christian goes to a small group once a month at about 3 hours each time, that puts that at 12/hrs a month. Multiply that by 12 (months in a year) and you 144 hours
in a year spent at small group. Divide that by 24 and you get 6 days a year.
Re-cap
Quiet Times: 15.2 days a year
Sunday: 6.5 days a year
Small Group: 6 days a year
Total: 27.7 days of a year devoted to God out of 365.
Now add up leisure, entertainment etc and you will see the problem. No wonder the church is in a rough spot. Obviously there are morepeople do in devotion to God but if you stop and look at the numbers this is staggering. Especially
since many “Christians” don’t even have this level of devotion. I need to spend more time with God!

A couple things

 1. Guys in light of the ladies doing their thing tomorrow and Saturday I would like to extend to you all a Raven invitation. Be at my house for some good times as men. We're having our own conference! Doors open at 8:30.

 2. Next week we are back at it again all LS baby! We will be looking at the most significant and intense statement that Christ said on the cross Mark 15:34 "And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?" which means, "My God, my God why have you forsaken me?" Intense man, intense.

3. This Sunday those of you who agreed to help with the video shoot for the song "Whatever It Takes," that Lo and I did for Josh is on. I saw some clouds in the forecast but thats what they said last week. We will leave after guest luncheon on Sunday, about 12:45 (unless it is clear that weather is not on our side) and will be doing the first segment on the Metro. I will provide Metro passes for those of you coming, at least for those who agreed to do it last week. We will catch the train to China Town to shoot another part of the video and then we will try to catch a meal there together. That I cannot pay for. Thank you in advance for being willing to do this!

4. We are getting new LS t-shirts this year. They should not cost more than $10 a person. We are currently designing the new shirt and should be ready to go soon.

5. Lastly, I had mentioned that I wanted to actually have some accountability for sharing the gospel. Some of you responded to that with a likewise desire. So here's what I propose. I am going to each week beginning May 7th post on the blog my weekly sharing the gospel stories. I would ask you to do the same. Each week send a brief two paragraphs of and who you shared the gospel with to lightswitchblog@gmail.com. We will post them on the site that we may all be encouraged and provoked. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO DO THIS!!!!!!! I am because it will add to the reality if I have to post every week who I am sharing the gospel with. If I do not share with someone I want you all to feel free to challenge me. I'm not talking legalistic here I'm talking faithfulness. So here are the two questions you can ask me when you see me:
        1. Have you been praying daily for opportunities to share the gospel?
        2. Have you shared the gospel in the past week?

I love you guys! Ladies have fun at the conference! Guys have fun tomorrow night! I will have fun always!!!!!!

Do you want an iPad?

The iPad is so new, so shiny, you may own it, or like most folks, you know a friend who has one and you like it! You like it a lot...so much that you want to buy one. So you look at your bank account and discover you have no money.

You sell your cat, you sell your neighbor's old car that's been sitting in his backyard for years, you sell your mother's china dishes, you hold a bake sale, you make your little sister dress up as a blue Navi from Avatar and charge people $1 each to take a picture with her. But you still do not have enough money to buy an iPad. Have you thought about your heart? The Resurgence blog recently did a great post about addressing your heart as you decide whether or not to buy an iPad and if it is a wise purchase, or an idol you may need to destory.

Judgments

At a recent Lightswitch meeting we asked some folks to give their thoughts on how the Judgments book affected them in their community groups. Here's what they had to say:

"The book helped me to re-evaluate my attitude towards others. It made me aware of how I interact with others."
~Megan Murphy

"The book changed my view of judging people according to personality, because before God we're equally sinners."
~Mandy Huang

"It helped me most in my marriage; you're so quick to judge those closest to you the harshest. Now I step back when I'm tempted to think harsh thoughts and make rash judgments about his motives."
~Sarah Leidner

"It was a wake up call for the way I thought about judgment. Oftentimes, you're presented with situations in your life where it can be easy to judge others. This book served as an eye opener for how we really should treat others lovingly and not make rash judgments."
~Michelle McVey

"I'm more aware of how judgmental I am. Therefore, I find that I spend more time confessing my judgments to the Lord. Before reading the Judgments book, I didn't realize I could biblically judge people."
~Laura Welch

"It's helped me be more conscious of my thoughts and to take control of my judgments."
~Michelle Stefun

"Because of the book, I realized how much I judge people and how I make my judgments without authority, which is a sin I wasn't aware of. My fellowship group helped me realize how to practically attack this area of my life and grow."
~Shane Kohout

A Place to Rest Your Head

39 Days Until Next.

Next is getting pretty close, school is coming to a close, it has been warm outside, and guess what? More hotel rooms have opened up! Happy days are here again! If you are one of those considering tossing your sleeping bag on the sidewalk outside the convention center, you may want to check out these hotels.

I understand that we have some first timers in attendance this year along with many who have been attending Next for many, many, many years. The Next blog has been doing some helpful posts on how to best prepare your heart for the conference. Why is this important? Next is a whirlwind of listening, learning, talking, hanging, singing, and not sleeping and can be so much all at once that all you might end up taking away from it is the new t-shirt you bought. We really want everyone to get the most they can out of the conference, so start preparing now. Here are links to posts on how to pray for those serving at Next, how to care for you friends at Next, and an excellent post titled: Ways to Engage God During the Conference. Hope this helps!

Oh and as of now, 6,979 people have seen my face in the Next promo. I realize that 500 of those views were by my mother, but it's still exciting!

This week

I will be doing some live blogging from T4G. A bunch of sites and sounds from the conference will be what I will post on. Please remember to pray for us as we are instructed to be better pastors. I always hate leaving you all and my family, so my comfort is in knowing I won't be gone too long and most of you won't miss me anyway. My family on the other hand will so also pray for them if you remember to do so. Thank you in advance for those of you that are hanging out with my family while I am gone. You do me a true kindness. Since I have an app on my phone I will not be using this blog, I will be using my own. Also there are other people who read my stuff that would be unaware of this blog. I will post more personal things a couple times to you all but go to Words, Flix and Verbs if you want the updates from the conference. I will miss you all and have a week fighting the good fight of faith!

Stuff, stuff and more stuff

I will try to do these in a bullet point fashion so as to not make huge overwhelming paragraphs.

1. The month of April's schedule has changed due to the fact that your pastors will be at T4G next week. the month will now look like this:
4/7 All LS
4/14-4/15 Men's and Ladies mtgs
4/21 singles with me at the church
4/22 couples with me at the church
4/28 Community groups
Please mark your calendars accordingly. Couples if you have made different arrangements for your groups thats fine just make sure you meet and know that you are with me on Thursday the 22nd. I will not be providing childcare that evening.
4/30 Game Night

2. Next is approaching as many of you know the hotels currently have no more rooms at the conference rate. I talked to Paul Medler at Sovgrace who said he is trying to and pretty confident that he wold be able to get rooms at other hotels for a cheap rate. Stay tuned. Singles we will discuss this at our meeting this month.

3. When I was in New Orleans I shot a portion of the video for the song Whatever It Takes that Lo and I did for Josh Harris to promote his new book Dug Down Deep. I need to shoot the other half of this video and I wanted to know if any of you would like to be in it or involved somehow. We will shoot this month, probably as soon as I get back from the conference. Please see me tonight if you are interested.

4. We are having a retreat this year in August 5-6. I will let you know more details soon but I wanted you all to know that I am looking forward to doing this again. Hopefully many if not all can make it. Last year created a lot of memories.

5. Next week while I am gone Betsy will be roughing it by herself. She would love some company so if anybody wants to please let her or me know.

6. This month concludes our study of judgments, unfortunately not our sinful practice of it, nonetheless we transition in May to a new issue. I hope you all have benefitted from it and actually used it to grow and not ignored for whatever reason. As I did with the couples I will explain to the singles, when I meet with you, why this topic and what to get out of this topic.

7. A buddy of mine an Irish pastor came up with a gospel test and I took it and thought it was interesting. I would like you all to take it. I can post it on here in a day or two or you can go to my blog.
Go to Gospel Test if you want to take it now.

Part 3: Next Promo Behind the Scenes

59 Days Until Next.

Next registration goes up by $25 tomorrow! Make sure you register today so you can pay $150 and not $175! Even though a lot of hotel rooms have sold out, the Next site says that it will be updated with more hotel options soon.

Here are the last behind the scenes videos of making the Next promo. The first one is me talking with the director about how he wants me to do the scene. The other is running through my lines quickly so they could test out the lighting and make sure everything was ready to go. The last video is me freaking out from nerves on the first take.

Should I date him?

72 Days Until Next.

This video is from pastor Justin Cox of the Passion for Christ Movement Christian Fellowship Church in Los Angeles, CA. He is a senior pastor in his thirties running a four-year old church comprised of teenagers, singles, and young married couples. Their church is like a mini-version of Next every Sunday. In this video the pastor talks about 15 questions girls should ask before dating a guy.

This church also produces what are called "Ex-t-shirts." These are t-shirts used by the wearer as a testimony of what they were before they became saved by Christ, such as "Cutter," "Fornicator," "Homosexual," "Hypocrite," and what applies to all of us: "Ex-Slave." They explain this philosophy here.

Part 2: Next Promo Behind the Scenes

77 Days Until Next.

Why should you go to Next? Don't let me tell you. Because I already did. In a video. Have you seriously not seen it yet? Oh. You have. Well, then, let the Next bloggers tell you instead. They have been frequently posting tips on how to pay for Next and a great post about the real reason why we go to Next: to meet with God. Next also has a webzine that comes out each month with articles from some of the speakers who will be at Next concerning topics beneficial in our preparation for the conference.

The March issue is on the topic of sanctification and has an article with notes from CJ's teaching on "Cravings & Conflict." I have listened to this message a couple times, and have always been affected by it. A craving is when you want something, like a piece of pumpkin pie, and conflict is what happens when you realize that your younger sister ate that last piece. If that is an experience you can relate to at all, then check out the notes and the message.

Here are some more videos from day one of the shoot. I sat on that couch for three hours while they set up the lighting. I would like to think that they were having technical difficulties but they actually were having trouble lighting my very white face against that background and my newly darkened hair. It took some movie magic to finally get it right.

Do you like your community group?

Let's hope that the answer to this question is "Yes." And if it isn't, well, then, pray that you will grow in fondness for the people in your group, at least to a level where you are not filled with a strong desire to kick one of them as they walk past you. For those who do like their community groups because they like the people or find it a splendid way to spend their Wednesday evenings, this is what they had to say:

"I love the opportunity to fellowship with new people on a deeper level. I also love our community group's random humor!"
~Brianna Smith

"I love building together with other families that God has given to us. Even though 'constant change is here to stay' these are the people God has called us to open our lives to and 'do life' with right now and friendships are being formed for life!"
~Evy Taracena

"I enjoy having a core group from where I can receive sound advice, encouragement, and prayer from an honest group of caring people. Also, I am loving the camaraderie that is slowly beginning to extend beyond our meetings. I am so thankful to God to be a part of such a community!"
~April Sanders

"I enjoy the chemistry our community group shares, and our meetings have been spiritually beneficial."
~Mark Novicio

"I enjoy my community group because it gives me a chance to build deeper relationships with guys and girls in Lightswitch."
~Bill Burnside

"I'm excited about my community group because I'm looking forward to more intimate Christian fellowship with other believers."
~Heidi Hempel
"I love talking, sharing, and praying with others in my community group."
~Victoria Sanders

"I'm learning a lot from the folks in my group. It's really encouraging to watch them grow in their faith and follow Jesus so passionately. Plus, we always have a lot of fun!"
~Michelle Stefun
"I love my community group because it's an opportunity to talk on a personal level with others. It's a great context in  which to get the guys' perspectives on stuff."
~Kennesha Dickson
"I like smaller groups because I'm able to hear people's hearts. Hearing about other people's walks reminds me that I'm not alone in mine. This builds me up and edifies me throughout the week."
~Laura Welch

"Definitely the people and the fellowship. I love getting together every week with the people in my group. Although I haven't known most of them for very long I have experienced the joy of getting to know them better and having real fellowship. Everyone seems eager to share and to pray for one another and get beyond the surface. Not to mention lots of laughter! We were nearly poisoned by Ben's dirty popcorn last week; it was pretty intense!"
~Sarah Leidner

"I love meeting with my community group because we encourage each other in the Lord and have great discussions about his word. I always leave feeling refreshed and encouraged to follow harder after Jesus."
~Ben Zipf

"I really enjoy having Christian friends to share my experiences with. The group has helped me to focus on God and his will for my life and marriage. I am grateful for the fellowship!"
~Benita Rivera

Next Promo Behind the Scenes

84 Days Until Next.

Filming the Next promo was quite an adventure. You can follow this adventure by checking out the posts that that were put up during the shoot on the Vinegar Hill Blog (look at January 13-16). Also, many do not know that for the first day of shooting Sophie Meath came to help out. She is considering studying film in college so she came along to see what the process was like (for those who don't know her she is part of M412 at SRC and is Clara and Holly Meath's younger sister).

Each day something went wrong. The first day they were using a Russian-made 16mm film camera that broke for some inexplicable reason. I tried to think that it wasn't because the camera was filming my face for the first time, but that could not be determined. Sophie brought her camera along and took some footage of us working while the camera was not working. All these shots you see of us filming the first day had to be re-shot with a digital camera the last day because it was lost due to camera malfunctions.

Let's Go To Next!!!

For those of you who live under very large rocks, just wanted to remind you that the Next conference is coming. Or if you've been off the planet for the last month, you can also check out the Next website because there is this nifty little video you should probably check out that promotes the conference. And if that isn't enough to convince you that we Lightswitchers need to be representing THE ROCK! at Next this year, then I'm out of ideas.

Here's the Next Breakdown:

When: Friday, May 28-Monday, May 31 at the Baltimore Convention Center
Registration Cost: Singles $150, Married couples $225
Beginning in April PRICES GO UP singles to $175, and marrieds to $250, so register soon!
It would be great if we could all stay at the same hotel, I would reccomend the Hilton.
Cost: $135/night, (With four people to a room it's $101 per person or $81 per person if you squeeze five people in a room)
When reserving a room make sure you say it's for the Next conference so you get the discount.

If money is your concern, have no fear, there is plenty of time, it is 87 days until Next and the Next blog just provided a post called "I'm Too Poor To Attend (Fundraising Ideas)." So there should be no reason for anyone not to come!

I heard from a reliable source that something happens when you actually go, so even if you think you could just download the messages, and listen to them on your way to class or work. You are mistaken. Let's go to Next.

Blog.Blogger.Blogging.Blogged.

I've been checking out more blogs lately as I seek to improve my blogging skills, so thought I'd share some of my discoveries. Leave a comment with any thoughts or links to other good blog posts you have read recently.

On Joshua Harris' blog he held a video contest for people to submit videos about Dug Down Deep. Here's the winning video:

DugDownDeep_Carnahan.mov from Covenant Life Church on Vimeo.

I also stumbled across this blog called Stuff White People Like based on the book by the same title by Christian Lander. Each post is numbered as part of a list of "What White People Like" including posts such as "#13 Tea" and "#67 Standing Still at Concerts." You really just gotta see it to believe it, it is quite hilarious. Hope none of you white folks gets offended.

We Got Ourselves a Winner!

Juan Cruz is the fortunate winner of the Dug Down Deep contest and shall receive his copy of the book. Juan submitted his answer just 4 minutes shy of an hour after the post about the contest was posted. It wasn't until after this occurred that I realized how that makes for a rather boring contest. Most people probably read the post with excitement only to instantly see their hopes dashed by the fact that someone else had already won. This is not Juan's fault, but I do promise that next time, the contest will involve more participation, excitement, and a chance for the common man to win the prize.

If such knowledge does not lift your spirits, and you are still looking for a book, then visit the Sovereign Grace Ministries online store which is having a gargantuan sale through the end of February! You can get select books and CDs for as little as $5-6. Check it out soon, the sale ends this week!

Free Book!

Joshua Harris has a new book out called Dug Down Deep. My excitement about this book is two-fold because:

1.This book encapsulates what the Next 2010 conference will be about this year, so reading it will prepare your head for that AND
2. It is not primarily about lust, courtshipdating a person, or dating the church. Hurray for Josh!

Josh is a good friend of Curt's, and he mentioned Curt in the first chapter of the book. The first person to post a comment with the sentence and page number that mentions Curt will receive a FREE copy of the book courtesy of the Lightswitch Blog. If you want to know even more, check out the great review of the book on Tim Challies' blog where he discusses his hilarious "tongue-in-cheek metric I call the Piper Factor. It measures how much what is said in a particular book has already been said (and usually said better) by John Piper."

February need to knows. Important please read sorry it's long

Hope you all are enjoying the snow as much as I'm not. Maybe when my kids get older I will rekindle the fun days of my youth with snowball fights and trash bag sledding. I await the day! Some things to know for this month as listed below.

I will be meeting with the married couples on Tuesday 2/16 (Will let you know definitely if this date works)

Singles we are together this Wednesday. Bring your Two Ways To Live Books. 7:30 Tip off time!

Game night @ my house on Friday 2/19 @ 8:08. I found out something about you all and I am going to flush it out in this nice game that we will play hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!! Can't believe I didn't know this until now! See you Friday night. Couples, see if some kids from 412 can baby sit. I would love to see you all laugh at this! For all I know you probably do it too!

If anyone did not get a Judgment booklet please grab one this Sunday. These are not optional as they will be very thematic in your community/fellwoship groups discussions the next few months. Some of you have already started to read this and like me have and are being affected. I personally will be reading this consistently as it can take a lot of repetition to get into my thick head. You all as well will be re-reading this booklet. Please do not do the evaluation worksheets at the end. You will get to those later. In your community groups (co-ed, fellowship groups will be your men's and ladies meetings. I know I know it's all fellowship and another group name) on the 24th you will primarily discuss up to page 12. You may read the whole thing if you want to but your discussion in your next group will go up to page 12.

I would like each of us to remember some scripture related to this for it is God's word in our hearts that protects us from our own hearts. I would like each of us to memorize James 4:11. What we do we do together! I  know for some it will be difficult to do this but I believe God has given each of us the ability to do so.

My goal for us this year is that we become unfamiliar with our knowledge of the grace of God so that it will be fresh to us as if it was new. Let's pursue the depth of our salvation so that as we go deeper it gets fresher. Where it is hard to stay fresh may it be unfamiliar to us that we continue to appreciate it. Let's get it!

Lastly in order to do this it is important that we take seriously our pursuit and the things that are layed before us. I know that reality has set in now and you realize you are stuck with me, for that I am sorry, but we are a family. Moreso than what has been experienced prior to this past two years. Not that we have arrived but we are more like minded than ever and this is the perfect time to really press in and grow together focusing on some similar themes. Time goes by fast. Please don't waste the year committed to not being committed. Examples of this are: Not doing the assignments (memorizing or reading), doing them at the last minute to say you have done them giving no time to think and apply allowing the word to have a real lasting impact in your life. Not participating in the discussions etc.

With a group our size I know not everyone is going to be on board with where we are going this year. That's fine. Not really but there is nothing I can do about it. However I remain committed to standing before the Lord having tried to present to him myself, my family and this church as people who look more and more like him each year. I say this with a genuine conscience before the Lord that I love you all very much. Never dreamed it would be like this for Betsy and I coming here. I actually believe I learn far more from you than I have taught. You guys are amazing! It has been my honor to be among you and given the title as your pastor. Thanks for putting up with me and loving my family in the process. Now somebody bring me a shovel that is not broken so I can do my driveway. All 3 of mine broke! Lol

Unfunny Inside Joke From 5 Years Ago Only Thing Holding Friendship Together

FEBRUARY 8, 2010 | ISSUE 46•05
SAN FRANCISCO—An unfunny private joke dating back to when they were roommates five years ago is reportedly the last remaining thread still connecting friends Jennifer Kerns and Kerri Gallagher. "All one of us has to do is say, 'You are hungry, Mr. Max,' and we'll both bust out laughing," Gallagher said of the shared reference that has outlasted each friend's recollection of the other's birthday, favorite pastime, and middle name. "Sometimes we'll spend entire phone conversations just sort of doing it back and forth. Most times, actually." Gallagher, unaware that Kerns was currently attending her mother's funeral, added that it had been a while since her friend had called.

Peyton Manning Apologizes For Cheating One Time When He Was 5

SEPTEMBER 20, 2007 | ISSUE 43•38
TERRE HAUTE, IN—Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning was barely able to compose himself as he apologized to his family, friends, coaches, team, and fans Tuesday, tearfully admitting that he had in fact cheated during a 1981 game of hide and seek by deliberately hiding inside his house even though it had been declared off-limits. "Although I was young, I still knew right from wrong, and youth is no excuse for my actions," the two-time NFL MVP told reporters during a 90-minute press conference. "This was no way for the best player to ever play football, let alone quarterback, to act. I'm willing to accept any punishment the NFL wishes to hand down, whether they choose to suspend me for the first a quarter of a game or even for an entire first half." Despite leaving a total of 54 messages on Roger Goodell's voicemail, Manning said the NFL commissioner had yet to inform him of any punishment.

It Snowed

So I am full of much sadness that we don't have church tomorrow. Hope everyone is snowed in with people they like! I'm snowed in with my family (whom I like) and we decided to take a walk today. You see, I have this addiction to slurpees. Beautiful sugary ice delights. Hmm hmm good. There is a 7-11 at the end of our street. No matter the weather they know to keep the machine running for us.
But you see. It was still snowing, and we have quite a large hill in front of our house which turned into Mt. Everest with the snow and the slurpees in our hands. Sadly my dad didn't make it.

Leave a comment with your snowed-in
adventures!
